You might not be getting enough Fluoride!

Are you one of those people that can’t leave the house without your bottle of water? And is that the only kind of water you drink? Then, you need to know that most bottled waters lack fluoride which is commonly found in public water and as we all know; the myth that ¨only children need fluoride¨ has been busted.
Sometimes we need more fluroide than what water and toothpaste can provide us and that’s when we need to consider having a fluoride treatment by our Pasadena dentist.
We can all benefit from this incredibly useful mineral which prevents tooth decay, cavities and strengthens tooth enamel by fighting bacteria in children and adults!
How do I know if I may need a fluoride treatment:

* If you have visible holes in teeth and toothaches.
* If you have had fillings done within the past year.
* If you wear braces, have crowns and/or bridges. These oral devices gather a lot of bacteria and you may require more fluoride intake to remove it.
* If your gums look like they have been pulled away from your teeth.
* If you have dry mouth or take medications that causes this.

How can Dr. O’Brien and his team treat you?

Our gentle and caring dentists near Pasadena will attend your needs with open arms. A fluoride treatment consists of applying a varnish, foam or gel into a mouth guard which you only have to wear for a few minutes. After this you can go home and keep on with the treatment using recommended toothpaste or a prescribed gel which will ensure you receive the proper amount of fluoride you need. Dietary vitamins may also be advised.
dentist pasadena

If you are used to drinking mostly bottled water look at the label to make sure it contains fluoride! Also, the tap water your drink should contain the right levels of fluoride which should be between 0.70 mg/L and 1.20 mg/L. You can get more information about this by contacting you local water supplier or visiting the California Department of Public Health

Keep in mind that our Pasadena dentists will be more than happy to help you get the right amount of fluoride you need to have a healthy smile!

Our Glendale cosmetic dentistry has specialized over the years on dental implants. Dr. Gary O’Brien understands the negative effects that missing teeth have on a person’s confidence and self-esteem. He knows the importance of being capable to live without embarrassment and inconvenience while eating, talking or even just smiling; some of the actions that for most of us happen regularly may be actions that patients suffering from this condition avoid at all cost…

You might not be as lonely as you think with your problem, there are many people with this same condition and we have the solution! In fact, you will realize why it’s so unnecessary to sleep over a solution when it is already handy: If you lost a tooth or more due to an accident or a periodontal disease but you are in generally good oral health, your solution is given here, at our Glendale dentistry.

On the other hand, over the time living with missing teeth will not only limit your social life and your eating, but it will also change your facial appearance and your mouth structure as your teeth are shifting due to the room available.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There are mostly benefits to dental implants, including :

Younger facial appearance

Increased confidence and self esteem

Reliability of the method

Clear speech

Facilitates the chewing of food and its digestion

Lifelong durability of the implant

Overall comfort

Placement of Dental Implants

Dental implants are traditionally completed in two phases, although technology is improving the method of making it possible to have your implants sooner and with less discomfort and inconvenience at the dentist office. This time we will describe how this treatment is commonly carried out:

• Phase 1

This process is generally performed in the Glendale dental office with local anesthesia or light sedation to allow complete comfort to the patient; this is known as the actual phase of implant. The dentist will use precise and gentle surgical techniques, in order to place the implants into the jawbone during 3 to 6 months, allowing the Osseo integration to take place. This step will ensure a solid foundation for teeth replacement. During this time, temporary bridges or dentures may be used to minimize any appearance or chewing inconvenience.

• Phase 2

This phase involves creating and placing the new tooth or teeth to the anchored implant(s) in your jaw. You can now enjoy your dental implants and feel as they are your natural teeth.

It was a busy day and I had just ended my day with an implant consultation. I sat at my desk and pulled up the patients chart and x-rays. I usually glance at the scan prior to looking over the health history to get an idea of the patients general health. There were five teeth in the front of the upper and four teeth on the lower with three molars randomly dispersed. Most of the teeth that remained were badly broken down with marginal dentistry that was not completed. I was shocked to find that this were the x-rays of a 28 year old young man. I immediately thought about all that this young adult must have gone through for his mouth to be in this condition. That is a sad realization for a father of three. The health history was unremarkable. My curiosity got the better of me so I grabbed up my loops and proceeded to the operatory where the staff had seated this young man.

As I walked into the room there was a nice looking young man that was well dressed and sitting in the chair with both hands folded on his lap. He was gazing down at his hands which were white from squeezing them so tight. I positioned myself in front of him and introduced myself and at that point he slowly turned his head and with a quiet stutter mumbled something that sounded like he was horrified and embarrased. I immediately backed off and sat down in the chair in front of him and quietly said, “I’m looking forward to helping you…my name is Gary.” He looked at me for the first time and with the same quiet broken stutter. He stated that he would like to know how much it would cost for implants. He didn’t smile at all. Most of the time we talked about his mouth he looked at the ground. Very introverted and possibly abused by another doctor. My heart immediately broke for this young man.His dental condition had converted a wonderful young life into a broken old man that was ashamed to interact with people.

I spent two hours explaining all that could be done and how long it would take to finish the work properly. By the end of the consultation he still had his stutter but seemed excited about the potential. Then we had to talk finances. I knew that all the major reconstruction necessary would be a financial burden for anyone, much less a 28 year old that was ‘on his own’ since the age of 15. We decided that we could start on the upper teeth and go from there.

Now it is Tuesday October 6, 2009. I haven’t seen this young man since his last cleaning six months ago. That’s right, we finished all his dentistry one year later in February of 09. This young man is an intelligent, hard working and responsible man that we all accepted as family after working with him for several months. I have no idea how he was able to finance such expensive dentistry but it was perfect. Every aspect of this case was to utter perfection. When he walks into our office now he is smiling from ear to ear. His speech is definite and commanding without the hint of a stutter. I told him today kiddingly that he is just too happy. As I performed a minor procedure on one of his teeth that we had been watching, I asked him what he was up to. He simply said, while laughing, “My life is great! I didn’t realize that I never smiled before. All my pictures before I had my teeth done, showed that I was forcing my mouth closed to avoid embarrassment.” He went on to say, “Now all the pictures of me show me as a happy guy that can’t stop smiling. I go out a lot. I love my new life!”

I finished the procedure and told him that he looked great and stepped into my office. I couldn’t help but think how lucky I am to be in a profession that I love so much. A profession that does more than fix teeth or reconstruct smiles. This case is just one example of many that I have had the privilege to see through to the end over the last thirty years. There are no words to describe the feelings that are running through me as I reflect on the other side of this case. What a rich and rewarding profession. I am a lucky man. This is why I love what I do!

I have spent 26 years researching the bone implant connection and the ever growing problem of bone loss associated with the implant which if not treated properly leads to implant failures. This problem is a very complex multi-factorial issue which to date has no real scientific solutions. Design of the implant thread and the shape of the implant are some of the well accepted and most commonly addressed etiologies by all progressive implant manufactures. I designed and patented the SDS implant in 1989. Since then, most implants on the market today use some or all of these features described within the video.

I am very proud to say that all the graphics and animation were designed and created by me in 1990. The video was designed to assist doctors confused by this process of bone loss with the intent of helping all patients around the world.

Although some of the material may be somewhat technical, I believe that all my patients deserve the opportunity to benefit from this knowledge. Today the SDS implants are the only implants used in my practice. It has been a great pleasure to see my thoughts accepted by the FDA as a Class III medical devise and allow all doctors the opportunity to take advantage of the most advanced dental implant design in the world.

I want to thank ACE Surgical for assisting me in realizing my dreams and helping all of my patients that receive dental implants.

Thank you for taking the time to view my website and enjoy this video, it is truly a labor of love for me.

Sincerely,

I have decided that the typical dental news letter is passé and unread by most patients. There is a beautiful side of general dentistry that only a select few have privileged to experience. Every day, I have the opportunity to catch-up with the many patients that have become close friends over the past thirty years. Now, taking care of my third and fourth (OMG!) generation of patients, I go through the joys and tears as well as the triumphs and heartaches associated with life that only those that are very close are allowed to experience.

This is a unique look into a side of my practice that makes me laugh and cry. I am able to help others, while fueling the many aspects of my own life as a husband, father, and now grandfather. It will be in the form of a blog that I call “The Other Side”. This blog is an ongoing account of the daily experiences that have made my profession one of the most rewarding and fulfilling aspects of my life.
